Hunting Camp Attacked in Mozambique’s Remote Niassa Region

According to Safari Club International, late morning on Thursday, August 3, a hunting camp in northern Mozambique was attacked. The camp was subsequently looted and burned.

A security alert from the United States embassy in Mozambique placed the lodge inside the Niassa Special Reserve. Other accounts locate it just outside that reserve, still in Niassa Province. Mozambique sent its armed forces, which are operating in the area. Those who carried out the attack have not been identified. Neighboring Cabo Delgado Province has a known insurgent group.

Several news organizations reported that three hunting clients from the United States were flown out of the bush by helicopter.

The embassy in Maputo has advised people to stay away from the border area of Niassa and Cabo Delgado Provinces and has warned against travel to the Niassa Special Reserve. The United States State Department travel website displays a Mozambique travel advisory.
