Why Hunt in Ethiopia?
Ethiopia is a collector’s and mountain hunter’s destination. The mountain nyala exists nowhere else as a huntable wild animal; Menelik’s bushbuck, highland forest game and a separate lowland list (Beisa oryx, Soemmerring’s gazelle, lesser kudu and more) make this country unlike any southern African ranch week. Expect altitude, horses or long walks, and tightly controlled hunting areas.
Mountain nyala only here
The flagship highland hunt. Controlled hunting areas in the Bale / Arsi / Ahmar ranges — glassing, tracking and fitness at serious elevation.
Menelik’s and highland forest
Menelik’s bushbuck, bushpig and associated highland species share the Afromontane mosaic. This is forest and escarpment hunting, not open plains.
Separate lowland country
Danakil and other arid blocks hold Beisa oryx, gazelles, gerenuk and Abyssinian bushbuck. Many hunters add a lowland leg — or book it as its own safari.
What Makes Ethiopia Unique
Ethiopia’s hunting product is defined by endemics and altitude. Mountain nyala live in cool, high forest and heath-edge country — typically 2,500–3,500 m — where mornings can freeze and afternoons demand layers. Hunts are conducted in designated controlled hunting areas under Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority rules; national parks remain photographic.
Licence length and species packages are formal. Mountain nyala safaris are often sold on multi-week highland licences; bolting a short ranch-style weekend onto Addis is not how this works. Horses may be used in steeper blocks; glassing from canyon rims and quiet stalks in juniper/ Hagenia forest are the norm.
The lowland list is a different climate and a different kit bag: heat, thorn and arid-country glassing. Confirm what is open on quota for your year — leopard and some exports have been restricted for certain markets — and treat highland and lowland as two maps, even when one outfitter runs both.
Hunting Regions in Ethiopia
Highland forest and Horn of Africa lowland are not interchangeable.
Name the hunting area, not only “Ethiopia”:
Bale / Arsi / Ahmar highlands
The mountain nyala heartland: Munessa, Odo Bulu, Damaro and related controlled hunting areas. Escarpments, montane forest and open glassing faces. Menelik’s bushbuck shares much of this country. Charter or long road from Addis.
Other highland forest blocks
Additional Afromontane concessions for bushbuck, forest hog and specialist highland game. Confirm current licences — inventory is small and area-specific.
Danakil and arid lowlands
Beisa oryx, Soemmerring’s gazelle, northern gerenuk, lesser kudu, Salt’s dik-dik and Abyssinian bushbuck in hot, dry country. A completely different hunt from Bale.
Western woodland / Nile buffalo country
More savanna-woodland flavour in the west where Nile buffalo and associated species are offered. Specialist and dependent on current outfitter rights — ask for the block name.
Seasons, quotas and open species change by concession and year. Confirm current rules with your outfitter before you book.
Best Time to Hunt Ethiopia
Highland mountain nyala hunting is best outside the main rains — typically October through June, with July–September making high-country access and glassing difficult. Official licence years can run August–July; your outfitter will place you in the practical window for the block.
Lowland arid hunts favour the cooler dry months when heat is manageable and visibility is good. Do not assume the same week that is perfect in Bale is perfect in the Danakil.
Addis Ababa is the international gateway. Many highland camps are a long drive or a charter hop — build a spare day. Pack serious cold-weather layers for highland nights and sun protection for mid-day glassing.

Foreign hunting is in designated CHAs with federal game scouts. Parks are not hunt blocks. Book operators who actually hold the area they advertise. -
Train for altitude
Mountain nyala country is high. Arrive early if you can, and be honest about fitness — horses help, they do not replace lungs. -
Licence length is real
Nyala packages often require a substantial minimum safari length. Price the full licence and charter, not just a daily rate screenshot. -
Export and CITES
Confirm trophy export rules for your home country before you book. Some species or destinations have changed import status in recent years.
