Description — Grassland

Grassland in a hunting sense means open or lightly wooded grassy plains — Highveld flats, short-grass plains and similar country where trees are sparse enough that you can glass for kilometres. Grass height changes with rainfall and fire; dry-season hunting often means shorter grass and better visibility.

Outfitters treat grassland as a distinct product: days built around optics, vehicle glassing and careful stalks across ground that gives animals every advantage of sight and scent. Rifle calibres and optics suited to longer shots are common talking points — always confirm local rules and shot distances with your PH.

Do not confuse grassland with mixed savanna. If your enquiry says “open plains,” ask whether the property is true grassland or savanna with scattered trees; the tactics and species mix differ.

Grassland hunting is strongest where rainfall and elevation keep woody cover thin. These are the regions hunters most often mean:

South African Highveld and Free State flats

Classic open plains for springbok, black wildebeest and blesbok on farms and conservancies with long sightlines.
